It's been scary lately how many local shops and businesses have been shutting their doors. Even in our unemployed tough times, it's important to shop locally.
So maybe in between library visits, you can splurge with a purchase at a local bookshop. The bookshop is one of those places that make a neighborhood feel like a neighborhood.
The City Paper just did a cover story on this very topic. Give the article a read to find even more local book spots. And maybe stop by an indie coffeehouse to start reading your new buy! Oh and these shops have some cool in-store events too.

The famous Stimulus Package. You've heard about it. Read about it. Talked about it. But what are all the details?
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is a major effort to breathe life into the economy, create and save jobs and address additional challenges.
The place to check out for all the deets is the Recovery.gov web site. It provides plan info, estimates for where the money is going, economic forecasts and impact on jobs created and tax cuts made. They are just estimates and forecasts but it helps to explain what the heck is or will be going on.
As things happen, Recovery.gov will also be the place to see how, when, and where your taxpayer dollars are being used. So you should def bookmark their site on your fave list!

Taking a minute outside of ourselves gives us both perspective and a little breathing room from our stress. Especially if it's for a good cause.
Living Beyond Breast Cancer was founded in 1991 and is on a mission "to empower all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life." The LBBC has a great event coming up in May...Yoga Unites! And yoga is great for all of us, women and men. The event is a basic, outdoor yoga class and Healthy Living Expo in Philadelphia to benefit women affected by breast cancer.
Somewhere in our six degrees of separation, the life of someone we know has been affected by this disease. So take that minute outside yourself to visit the LBBC Yoga Unites web site.

For a living that is. It’s the question we all dread, and it’s asked way too often. Here are some ideas to get you through that awkward moment.
1) You aren’t defined by your employer. Your talent is your talent whether you’re getting paid for it or not. If you’re trained as a designer, you’re still a designer...just unfortunately without the paycheck. If people ask what you design, list off stuff you’ve done in the past. The man doesn’t own you.
2) Free to freelance. If you’re not working for someone else, you’re working for yourself! Tell people you’re freelancing and give them your contact info in case they hear of something. Just don’t write it on a food stamp.
3) We’re in an economic crisis!!!!!! In this case, brutal honesty is admirable. With so many millions of people out of work, unemployment is no longer a reflection on you. Say it boldly: “I’m not working”…you have nothing to be ashamed of. You’re likely to get a free drink out of the situation. And if someone’s condescendingly sympathetic or just a plain jerk, you can smile and know that they’ll probably be bookmarking this blog in no time.
